Fire extinguishers & fire safety equipment.
The right extinguisher for the right risk, in the right place. We select equipment from the premises’ fire risks, not from a standard bundle.
Fitted at the fire point.
Extinguishers are mounted on brackets or stands at fire points on the escape route, with the right signage above each, at a height people can reach.
Selected for the risk
Extinguishers are not interchangeable. A water extinguisher on an electrical fire or a fat fire can make things worse. So the starting point is always the same: what could burn here, and how? The answer decides the types, how many and where they go. See extinguisher types explained.
What we supply and install
- Extinguishers of the appropriate types, wall-mounted or on stands
- Fire blankets for kitchens and catering areas
- Fire point signage and extinguisher identification
- Fire action notices displayed by call points and exits
- Emergency lighting and exit signs where the premises need them
Placing them
Extinguishers are normally sited on escape routes, near exits and close to the specific risks they are meant for, so people can reach them without going further into danger. Heights, signage and visibility all matter.
Training
An extinguisher is only useful if someone can use it. Staff should know what is where and when not to try. Fighting a fire is never a legal duty, and the first priority is always getting people out.
Servicing and records
Extinguishers need regular inspection, and annual servicing by a competent person is the usual standard (BS 5306-3). Keep a record. If you need servicing arrangements for existing extinguishers, ask us and we will advise on what is required.
Not a catalogue saleIf your premises needs two extinguishers, we will say two, not six. See our fire safety checks.
Wheeled units and fire points.
Yards, car parks, plant areas and construction sites often need wheeled extinguishers or a fire point with several types together, with a call point nearby.
Tagged, dated and recorded.
Each extinguisher carries an inspection record. Annual servicing is recorded on it and in your logbook.
Fire blankets
A fire blanket is for smothering small fires, especially pan fires in kitchens, and for wrapping a person whose clothing is alight. It should be mounted where it can be reached without crossing the cooker, and replaced after use or if damaged.
Common questions.
Which fire extinguisher do I need?
It depends on what could burn. Water suits ordinary materials like paper and wood; foam suits those plus flammable liquids; CO2 suits electrical equipment; dry powder is versatile but messy; wet chemical is for cooking oils. See extinguisher types.
How many extinguishers does a business need?
It depends on the size, layout and risks of the premises, and is decided by the fire risk assessment and the relevant standard. As a minimum there is usually at least one at each fire point on each floor.
How often do extinguishers need servicing?
Annually by a competent person is the usual standard, with additional extended servicing at longer intervals, depending on type. Staff should also visually check them regularly.
