Fire alarms for pubs, restaurants and hospitality.
Kitchens, crowds, late nights and sometimes guests asleep upstairs. Hospitality premises carry some of the highest everyday fire risk.
What matters in this kind of building
Hospitality premises have cooking, electrical load, many people unfamiliar with the layout and, in pubs and guest houses, people sleeping. Each raises the standard of protection the risk assessment is likely to call for.
- Detection suited to kitchens, where smoke detectors cause false alarms and heat detectors are common
- Audible and visual warning throughout, including in noisy bars and function rooms
- Higher-level protection where people sleep, such as guest rooms
- Fire blankets and wet chemical extinguishers near cooking, selected for the equipment
- Emergency lighting and illuminated exit signs for evenings and busy periods
Systems that tend to suit
Larger venues and those with accommodation usually benefit from addressable systems, which locate the alarm precisely. Smaller pubs and cafes are often well served by conventional or wireless. Kitchen detection is chosen with false alarms in mind.
Practical points
- Do not cover or disable kitchen detectors; ask us for the right type instead
- Keep escape routes clear of barrels, bins and stored stock
- Test emergency lighting monthly and record it
- Make sure new staff know the alarm and the assembly point
Responsible personIf you run or manage these premises you are likely to be the ’responsible person’. See your responsibilities, or arrange a fire safety check.
Common questions.
Do pubs and restaurants need emergency lighting?
Most do, since premises are used in the evening and customers are unfamiliar with the layout. The fire risk assessment decides where. See emergency lighting.
Our kitchen keeps setting off the alarm. What can we do?
The usual answer is the right detector for the location, such as a heat detector or multi-sensor, rather than removing detection. See false alarms.
